Summer Fun – Pilates and Kayaking

Now that the temperature is getting into the 80’s it is time here in NY to explore all the cool outdoor water sports. One of my favorites is Kayaking especially on a lake or ocean inlet. Kayaking challenges your core, back, shoulders, and arms.  Although the paddling primarily targets the upper body your legs are working to help you balance and weight bear evenly in the kayak. Note, the latissimus dorsi (lats) are the heavy hitters in the the paddling choreography, they are the primary back muscles that origin at the upper arm bones (humeri) helping to distribute power from your back to your arms and lower body.

Pilates is great for kayakers because it helps build core strength, flexibility, posture, balance and injury prevention. So, the next time you head out for a kayaking adventure, consider incorporating Pilates into your training routine. You'll be amazed at how this mind-body exercise can help you paddle farther, faster, and with more enjoyment.
